I will be exploring textile arts, particularly embroidery and the sewing of forms to create soft sculptures, to discover something new (to me) about the relationship between idea generation and content generation. I enjoy making work stream-of-consciousness, and many of my favorite drawings have been made that way, quickly and without a plan. Embroidery and sewing, unlike drawing or painting, are longer-form processes that take time, and are usually planned to some degree. I intend to find out how I can bring stream of consciousness and embroidery/soft sculpture together, or at the very least gain a better understanding of my own decision-making process, and have the time and space to learn to trust it. I do not yet know how long one piece will take me, but I would like to set a malleable goal of 10 pieces.

Topics and inspiration will come from a variety of sources, to be determined. What I have begun with as a topic for my first piece is self-forgiveness, and a focus on not inwardly punishing myself for perceived artistic mistakes: instead just following the needle and thread wherever they go. I anticipate the incorporation of sewing soft sculptures to involve a little more planning than the process of embroidery, but above all I want to experiment and worry less about the outcome than the authenticity of the process.
