Mapping Spaces: Project Proposal
January 27, 2022

I am thinking of doing something with the idea of mapping for my capstone project. I’ve liked the idea of mapping and have been drawing maps for a long time. If I’m not doing design work I’m probably doing something map-related in terms of my art. I want to explore mapping spaces, whether they are real or not. Some maps will have more context and others will be more abstract in nature.

The main techniques that I will be using for this project would be sketching and digital design/drawing. All of the skills that I would need for this project have been acquired by a class at Montserrat, my own independent work, or a combination of the two. This project may be about maps and mapping but also involves design and shapes. Maps are created with shapes that are drawn in by someone and often have to be designed to be readable and usable. There’s a lot of overlap with mapping and design in the way that both can be used as tools of communication

Mapping A Space

I want to explore mapping spaces, whether they are real or not. Some maps will have more context and others will be more abstract in nature.

The main techniques that I will be using for this project would be sketching, 3D printing, 3D modeling, digital design/drawing. The 3D aspect would incorporate topography or perhaps other elements; it would involve 3D printing using PLA, from 3D models made via Rhino. All of the skills that I would need for this project have been acquired by a class and Montserrat, my own independent work, or a combination of the two.

I like the idea of mapping and have been drawing maps for a long time. If I’m not doing design work I’m probably doing something map-related in terms of my art. I am thinking of doing something with the idea of mapping for my capstone project. I’ve also like the idea of mapping and have been drawing maps for a long time. If I’m not doing design work I’m probably doing something map-related in terms of my art. Right now I’m thinking of making one big map that will be at least 30” by 20” inches, “poster” size if you will. Maybe a little larger if need but still around that size. The map will start off as sketches made with pencils and pens then either be transferred to the final large-scale piece either by digital means or traditional means. The digital way would be scanning the sketches in and most likely using an adobe program to make a digital version that could be printed out on a large poster printer. The non-digital way would be drawing directly onto the final piece of paper using the sketches as a reference or inspiration and using markers and or paint for color. These ways could possibly overlap as well. Another element I was thinking of adding to my map would be some sort of a 3D element being in a more topographical way or as pieces of a broad game. The 3D elements would be 3D printed using PLA and will involve making the 3D models via Rhino, mesh mixer, scanning, or a combination of these things.

The main techniques that I will be using for this project would be sketching, 3D printing, 3D modeling, and possibly painting and or digital design/drawing. All of the skills that I would need for this project have been acquired by a class and Montserrat, my own independent work, or a combination of the two...

This project may be about maps and mapping but also involves design and shapes. Maps are created with shapes that are drawn in by someone and often have to be designed to be readable and usable. There’s a lot of overlap with mapping and design in the way that both can be used as tools of communication. My inspirations for map-making would be things like Lord of the Rings, World of Warcraft, and DnD. I don’t really look at specific artists but, of course, being in art school and having artist friends I am exposed to different types of art. I guess through looking at the work I see from friends, classmates and whatever I run into has inspired/influenced my work. Also, video games have definitely played a role in that as well as I’m probably playing them if I’m not making art.
