Women are often depicted and treated like decorations, objects, or as a form to project male ideas and interests onto. This work explores the objectification, idealization, perception and treatment of women. The pieces shift from being angry, torn apart collages made from harshly treated materials, to more uniformly sized compositions meditating on a certain space within the piece. By reflecting on my own observations and experiences, I am creating collages representing the frustrating reality of existing as a woman.

Women and the Future
14 October 2021
My project has evolved from a more broad study of the future to taking a more specific, critical analysis. After looking at a variety of material that include predictions for the future and retrofuturist imagery, (focusing on the 1930s-1960s), I have been creating work with a critical lens of these predictions while looking for similarities and parallels within my sources.
Through the creation of collages, I have refined my interest to studying how women are portrayed in these idealistic predictions of a future world. Women were used as decorations, background imagery, or as a form to project male ideas and interests onto. I am interested in exploring this more and comparing the treatment of women in this kind of media to how they are treated today.
The Future

It is impossible to know for sure what the future will look like. Many artists have depicted a future world containing flying cars, aliens, intergalactic space travel and robots. Using their work as inspiratio, I will explore a futuristic world of my own design through the creation of illustrations, posters, flyers, and advertisements. By taing inspiration from the artistic style of retrofuturism, I will explore the creative possibilities of the unknown while looking to the past for inspiration. The relationship between illustration and design is something I additionally will explore through my thesis. A variety of different materials will be utilized for this project, including digital media, collage, and paint.
Aside from my design classes, I have been using any open space in my schedule to take illustration and fine arts courses to broaden my artistic skills as well as my understanding of different media. This project will allow me to explore different ways of incorporating illustration into my design work that I can then use in my professional life as a designer.
