A Little New Work

I embroidered these in the car on the way to my grandfather's burial this weekend. Life circumstances have made it difficult to create new work consistently these past few weeks but I do have these. One of them I created to wear at the gathering in honor of my grandfather.  The other is a tactile collage-like composition reflective of my recent mental state.

Abstract Composition 1 WIP

Thoughts of creating an abstract composition series that could be patches to put on jackets or bags.  Disinterested in making them commodities; but I am interested in making them functional.  This one is not done.

Form|thought Update March 21

Here is the hand sanitizer cover I embroidered for my show, so that folks can touch my art with clean hands, and the bottle doesn't stick out too much.  Sorry for the bad pictures, I had to take them in my room.

And here are the most recent pictures of my main piece.  I am focusing on joy and love.  If what I do does not bring me joy, there is no point.

A Small Update - More Soon

My update for the week is a little small.  I will be working hard on Wednesday to catch up to speed.

I still have plans to create a multi-sectioned book out of felt and embroidery floss.  For now I am working on the ongoing stream of consciousness project.  Thinking about worms, from the input I got last class.

This is a Book (shh, grow, quiet, carry)

Here is a completed book.  As I am a book arts student, it is only natural that I sometimes return to the codex for inspiration. Natural, but not necessary (I might not do this again). The content of the pages are less stream of consciousness than the ongoing Oven Mitt of Feelings, but are nonetheless directly related to my experience creating art.  A little bit of a book of mantras and their backsides.

Formthought Update 4

1. The Disembodied Head and Torso of Mr. Inside Out. What was going to be his head and body became interesting items in their own right and are displayed as they are. Perhaps my next attempt to infuse life into a form will be more successful.  These have been compared by others to fun ravioli, or the inner workings of a cell.  They are fun to squeeze.

2. Section Three of the Long Ongoing Thought.  This weekend I was in North Adams looking at different houses and balancing anxiety and triumph at my mother's putting down a deposit on a home.  Marks I made reflect those things, I think. I try not to think too hard about it but am open to hearing what others get from it.

3. A book of thoughts that has no thoughts in it yet.  3-hole pamphlet made from felt and cotton fabric.  A small experiment into an embroidered book; stay tuned for next week when maybe it will have something inside of it.

Formthought Update 3

From last time, these are the fronts and backs of the embroidered circle, and a picture of them sewn together almost all the way around.  This is to be the head of Mr. Inside Out, as he is called in my head right now. I imagine him as a personified reflection of the mixed up backs of my embroidery, and his aesthetic base is not unlike the scribbled imaginary friends I frequently drew as a kid.

This week I have regrettably not had much time to sit down and get in the creative zone -- but I have connected a new piece of this, um, piece, and this is the state of it as of 2/14. Each time I pick it up I begin a new thought, and each time I put it down that thought is finished. Sometimes I pick up the trail of yesterday's thought, but more often I find that my state of mind is different and therefore what I'm doing takes on a slightly different character.

Formthought Update 2

This week I am thinking about a brighter future for my mother and me in a house we buy in western Mass. I am thinking about making the most of the time I have left here.

I am thinking about using the scraps of felt I cut away and incorporating them so they are not wasted. I am thinking of lines and how they can be so directional and show so much emotion. Just a simple line and nothing else. Also, I am thinking about the way my needle jumps around from here to over there and back again, and about how that is much like the jumping of the mind from thought to thought, on a long tangent. Only when the back is viewed, is the true path seen. I look forward to playing more with that on another piece.

Formthought Update 1

My first update - here is the state of the piece as of 2/1/22. Sections are being added on to the first section (the blue) and I am embroidering as I go. Emphasis is on self-forgiveness and going with the flow of creation. I like to imagine that as I continue adding new embroidered modules, in different shapes, sizes, and colors, it will be a living record of my progress on the project and in the development of my skill and comfort level.
